The California
Distinguished School Program, initiated in 1985, honors elementary
and secondary schools in alternate years. The School Recognition
Program, created in 1985 as part of the accountability initiative,
communicates and reinforces the educational priorities of the State
Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of
Education. It rewards schools that are successfully implementing
those priorities, and identifies models of achievement for other
schools. |
| Calif. Regional
Science, Math & Engineering Fair Winners |
 |
The goal of
this program is to encourage students in grades 6-12 to learn about
science by doing their own science fair projects. The Fair affords
an opportunity to recognize these students and their mentors for
their efforts. Award winning students at the regional level may go
on to compete at the state and national levels. |

| History Day Winners |
 |
History Day's goal is to promote the study of history
by engaging students in the excitement of historical inquiry and
creative presentation. Participating students gain useful
historical knowledge and perspective, and they develop critical
thinking and problem solving skills that help them manage and use
information now and in the future. Winners at the county level are invited to
compete in the State finals. |
| Mock Trial Winners |
 |
The Mock Trial is designed to demystify the working of our
legal institutions. Teams of high school students study a
hypothetical criminal case, do legal research, are coached by
volunteer attorneys, and present their case in court before
Municipal and Superior Court Judges. Participating students take on
the roles of counsel, witnesses and court clerks. Congratulations
to the Mock Trial Winning Team. |

Sponsored by
the U. S. Department of Education, the program identifies and
recognizes outstanding public and private elementary and secondary
schools in alternating years. All of California's public schools
that were site-visited were selected for national recognition, and
all of them were previously designated as California Distinguished
Schools. Visit this site for more information: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/sr/br |
| Physical Fitness Pentathlon Winners |
 |
The Fresno
County Office of Education and Dan Gamel are proud to sponsor the
first annual Physical Fitness Pentathlon. This event is designed to
focus attention on the physical well being of school children and
to create a day-long series of activities that promote physical
fitness. Teams of 5th and 7th graders from schools all over Fresno
county compete for top honors in the Pentathlon. |
| Spell Off Winners |
 |
What's in a
word? Plenty, especially when it's the rigors of an annual spelling
bee and the participants are Fresno County elementary and junior
high school students. The top two winners from both the elementary
and junior high divisions go on to represent Fresno County in the
California State Spelling Championship. |
| Young Authors' Faire Winners |
 |
This
celebration of talent showcases original student writing in Fresno
County. Ten K-6 students from each participating school may submit
books they have written and illustrated. Middle School/Jr. High
students are invited to submit a display of writing projects they
have participated in. |
